Fish Tavernas in Nea Michaniona: How to Eat Fresh Fish Like a Local

In Michaniona you don't ask whether the fish is fresh. You ask what the boats brought in today. This is home to Greece's biggest fishing fleet, and the fish on your plate tonight was most likely swimming in the Thermaic Gulf last night.
Most of our guests ask on day one: “Where should we eat fish?” Honestly, it's hard to eat badly in Michaniona. But a few small things make the difference between a decent meal and an evening you'll remember. Here they are, the way we'd tell you over the garden table.
Where to find the fish tavernas
The heart of it all is the harbour. Along the quay, between the fishing boats and trawlers, the tavernas set their tables almost on the water. In the late afternoon you'll see the fishermen sorting their nets, and then the sky over the gulf turns orange. You don't need a plan: stroll along the quay and pick the one that pulls you in.
Your second option is Tourbali beach, where the places are more relaxed: meze bars and old-style kafeneia serving small plates with a view. Perfect for a long lunch after a swim, swimsuit still damp.

How to order like a local
Ask “what do you have today?”
The menu tells you what might be available. The waiter tells you what actually is. In a good fish taverna they'll walk you to the fridge or the counter so you can see the fish yourself.
Big fish is sold by the kilo
Sea bream, sea bass, red porgy, dentex and the like are priced per kilo, not per portion. It's not a trick, that's how it works all over Greece. Just ask the price per kilo and how much your fish weighs, and there won't be any surprises on the bill.
Don't skip the small fish
Fried anchovies, grilled sardines, whitebait. They're cheap, they come in every day and, to us, they're the most “Michaniona” dish there is. A plate of anchovies with lemon, a Greek salad and a small carafe of tsipouro, and your evening is sorted.
Thermaic Gulf mussels
The Thermaic Gulf is Greece's biggest mussel producer, so mussels here aren't a luxury. Try them steamed with a splash of wine and herbs, or saganaki with feta and tomato, and keep some bread for the sauce.
Tip: In Thessaloniki, tsipouro often comes with a small meze on the house, and each new carafe brings another one. Don't order everything at once. Let the table fill up slowly.
Stay at Theodoras House

What to eat in each season
You don't need to be a fisherman to order well. A few rules are enough:
- Summer: Sardine season. Greeks even have a saying about the “August sardine” meaning something really good. It's also the best time for mussels.
- Autumn: Anchovies and mackerel, oily and delicious over charcoal.
- Winter: Fewer tables outside, more fish soup (kakavia). If you're here on a cold day, ask for soup.
- All year: Squid, grilled octopus, shrimp saganaki.
A few names to start with
Places change and so do ratings, so we'll only give you a few names that rank consistently high in reviews as we write this:
- Psarotaverna Theodoros: Number one on Tripadvisor for Nea Michaniona, with tables by the sea.
- Psarotaverna “I Touloumba”: Very well rated on Restaurant Guru.
- To Serbeti (kafeneio and meze bar): Simple home cooking and, as reviewers put it, one of the most beautiful views of the Thermaic Gulf.
And of course, ask us. We usually know who brought in good fish today.
FAQ
How much does fish cost in Michaniona's tavernas?
Larger fish is sold by the kilo and the price depends on the species and the day's catch. Ask for the price per kilo and to see the fish before it's grilled. Small fish like anchovies, sardines and whitebait are cheaper and always fresh.
Do I need to book?
On summer weekends and during the village festival (22 to 23 August), yes, especially for a table by the water at sunset.
What should I try?
Thermaic Gulf mussels (steamed or saganaki), grilled sardines, fried anchovies and the catch of the day, with a glass of tsipouro or ouzo.
