Day Trips from Thessaloniki: Vergina, Pella, Dion, Edessa and Meteora

Nea Michaniona is perfect for the sea. But Macedonia also has royal tombs, a mountain of the gods, waterfalls and monasteries perched on rocks. If you're staying a week, it's worth stealing a day or two from the beach.
The times below are from the house, by car, and approximate. Always check the map on the day.
Vergina and Pella: the Macedonia of Philip and Alexander
- ~1 h 15 min
- Easy to combine
If you only do one trip, do this one. At Vergina, the Museum of the Royal Tombs is built inside the burial mound, and walking in feels like going underground. This is where the tomb of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great, was found, with treasures that take your breath away. At Pella, the capital of the Macedonian kingdom and Alexander's birthplace, you'll see the famous pebble mosaic floors.
They're about 25 km apart, so they fit easily into one day. Start with Vergina, which gets busier, and finish at Pella in the afternoon.
Dion and Mount Olympus: the mountain of the gods
- ~1 h 15 min
- Archaeology & nature
You see Olympus every evening from Angelochori. Why not get closer? Dion was the Macedonians' sacred site at the foot of the mountain, with games held in honour of Zeus and temples set among water and plane trees. Then drive up to Litochoro and walk a little way into the Enipeas gorge. You don't need to climb to the summit to get a taste.
Stay at Theodoras House
A 91 m² home with a garden and barbecue in Nea Michaniona, for up to 7 guests, with free parking. Everything in this guide is a short drive away.
Edessa and Pozar: water, water everywhere
- ~1 h 30 min to Edessa
- Hot springs
Edessa is the city of water, with waterfalls running right through town, one of which you can walk behind. A little further on, at Pozar Baths, hot water flows down a stream through the forest and forms natural pools. Especially outside summer, “waterfalls in the morning, hot springs in the afternoon” is pure magic.
Meteora: worth the drive?
- ~3 hours
- A very long day
Monasteries on rocks that seem to hang in the air. Yes, it's worth it. But it's about three hours each way, so in one day you'll spend six in the car. If you can, stay a night in Kalambaka. Otherwise leave at sunrise or take an organised tour from Thessaloniki and let someone else drive.
Kavala and Philippi
- ~2 hours
- City & archaeological site
Kavala is one of northern Greece's prettiest towns, with a castle, an aqueduct and an old quarter above the harbour. Philippi, just before it, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A long day, but a full one.
A few tips
- Archaeological sites keep different hours in winter and summer. Check before you go.
- In summer, leave early so you're at the open-air sites before midday.
- Come back to Michaniona for dinner. After a day on the road, fish at the harbour is the best reward.
- If you want Halkidiki too, read Halkidiki or Thessaloniki?
FAQ
Can I see Vergina and Pella in one day?
Yes. They're on the same road west of Thessaloniki, about 25 km apart, and fit comfortably into one day by car.
Is Meteora worth it as a day trip?
It is, but it's roughly a 3-hour drive each way. If you only have one day, start very early or consider an organised tour so you're not the one driving.
