Sailing from Nea Michaniona to the Shipwreck: Is the Boat Trip Worth It?

Most people see the Epanomi shipwreck from the sand. But there's a nicer way to get there: under sail, from Michaniona harbour, ten minutes from the house.
What's included
The day cruises we found on the big booking platforms use a sailing yacht of around 14 metres and follow a similar plan:
- Departure from Nea Michaniona, usually around 11:00.
- About an hour of sailing to the shipwreck bay near Cape Epanomi.
- Swimming and snorkelling around the wreck, with time to walk on the sand spit.
- Greek lunch on board.
- Return after about another hour of sailing. The whole trip takes around six hours.
Some versions include a local wine tasting before heading back. Prices on the platforms start at around 95 euros per person, with a minimum of two people. Prices change by season, so check before you book.
Is it worth it?
Our honest answer: it depends on what you're after.
It's worth it if...
- You've never been on a sailing boat and want to try.
- You'd like to see the coast from the water: Michaniona, Angelochori, the Epanomi dunes.
- You're celebrating something, or you just want one day of your holiday to feel different.
Maybe not if...
- You get seasick easily.
- You have very young children who won't enjoy six hours on a boat.
- You only want to see the wreck. By car it's 20 minutes and free. See how to get there.
Stay at Theodoras House
A 91 m虏 home with a garden and barbecue in Nea Michaniona, for up to 7 guests, with free parking. Everything in this guide is a short drive away.
What to bring
- ID card or passport. Organisers ask everyone for one.
- Swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, a hat.
- A mask, if you have your own. There's usually one on board, but ask.
- A light long-sleeved top for the way back. It gets cooler at sea in the afternoon.
- Seasickness tablets if you need them. Take them before you board.
Other ways to get out on the water
If six hours sounds like a lot, there are shorter options. Angelochori has a watersports school offering SUP, canoeing, windsurfing and snorkelling. An hour of paddleboarding at sunset is one of the most peaceful things you can do here. And for the brave, there's kitesurfing.
