Skopje to Nea Michaniona by Car: Route, Border and Tolls
Some of our favourite guests come from North Macedonia, and the drive is short enough that many make it for a long weekend. From Skopje to our garden in Nea Michaniona is about three hours. Here's the route we recommend.
The route
- Skopje → Veles → Gevgelija on the A1 motorway, heading south.
- Bogorodica / Evzoni: the border crossing, open 24/7.
- In Greece, continue south on the A1 towards Thessaloniki.
- On the Thessaloniki ring road, follow the signs for the airport, then for Perea / Agia Triada / N. Michaniona along the coastal road.
Skopje to Thessaloniki is about 240 km, and Nea Michaniona is another 35 km or so: roughly 3 hours 15 minutes in total without waiting at the border. Put Georgiou Seferi 5, Nea Michaniona in your navigation and double-check it says Nea Michaniona, because there's a street with the same name in Neoi Epivates.
The border
- Waiting time: Usually 5 to 30 minutes. On the big summer travel days, around 1 July, 15 July and 1 August, and on weekend mornings, it can be much longer. Live queue information is available online.
- Documents: Passport or ID card valid for EU entry, driving licence, car registration and insurance valid in Greece.
- Tolls: There are toll stations on both sides. In Greece, the first one is about 500 m after the border and costs around 2.40 euros for a car. Prices change, so keep some cash and a card handy.
Tip: Fill up before you cross. Fuel in Greece is usually more expensive.

When you arrive
Check-in is from 14:00 to 23:00. Send us your expected arrival time and we'll be ready. Park in the free spot by the house and walk 1.2 km to Tourbali beach, with its Blue Flag and shallow water that's perfect for kids.
