Potamos Epanomi: The Wildest Beach Near Thessaloniki

Sandy beach with a view of the sea and the mountains

Up to Michaniona the Thermaic is a gulf: calm, shallow, family-friendly. Turn south towards Epanomi and suddenly the sea opens up, the horizon gets wider and the shore turns into dunes. That's Potamos.

Why it's worth it

Most Thessaloniki guides put Potamos near the top of their list, and with good reason. The sand is soft, the water is clear and the view stretches all the way to Mount Olympus. Behind the beach lies the Epanomi wetland, with dunes and salt marsh, home to hundreds of animal species and more than 2,000 kinds of plants. It's the closest thing to wild nature you'll find this near the city.

Organised or quiet? Both

The best thing about Potamos is that you get to choose. The first stretch has beach bars, sunbeds, umbrellas, music and people. Walk a little south and the crowds thin out. Further still, at the end of the sand spit, is the shipwreck.

Organised beach with sunshades
The organised sections have shade and coffee. The rest is just sand and sea.

The wind

Because the coast faces the open sea, it catches wind more often than the beaches inside the gulf. For kitesurfers and windsurfers that's a gift. There's a school in the area, covered in our kitesurfing article. If you just want to swim, check the forecast before you set off. On very windy days, Tourbali or Agia Triada are more pleasant.

Stay at Theodoras House

A 91 m² home with a garden and barbecue in Nea Michaniona, for up to 7 guests, with free parking. Everything in this guide is a short drive away.

Getting there

From Theodoras House it's about a 20-minute drive. Put “Potamos Epanomi” into your maps app. On summer weekends the parking near the beach bars fills up early, so either arrive before 10:30 or be ready for a short walk. There's practically no public transport to the beach, so you'll need a car or a taxi.

Tips

  • Bring your own shade for the free stretches. There are no trees.
  • Don't drive onto the dunes. It's a protected habitat and the easiest way to get stuck in the sand.
  • Pair Potamos with an afternoon visit to an Epanomi winery.
  • For all the beaches in the area on one page, see our beach guide.

FAQ

Is Potamos beach organised?

Part of it has beach bars, sunbeds and umbrellas. The further you walk towards the cape and the shipwreck, the wilder and quieter it gets.

Is it good for kids?

In the organised sections, yes, but take care on windy days because it faces the open sea. For very small children, Tourbali in Michaniona is calmer.
